First, the Big Game. I speak, of course, of Chelsea taking on Manchester United at Stamford Bridge. Played to a 1-1 draw but the point was snatched at the Death so it at least felt like a win. Chelsea remain unbeaten since Mourinho was sacked just before Christmas.
Oh...and there was a Super Bowl too.
I don't watch a lot of of football, really, but I usually watch the playoffs and I always watch the Super Bowl, every damn minute if it, because it is one of those cultural touchstones that are more and more unusual these days.
This one was gratifying, even if it wasn't a classic game by any means. I wanted the Broncos to win, wanted to see Payton Manning get that second super bowl to cement his legacy as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. I didn't think they would...I under estimated how good the Broncos defense was, like I think many of us did. Manning may be a shadow of what he once was, but it's a fitting coda to his career, if he takes it.
Now, after drinking his Budweiser and eating, I imagine, a bit of Poppa Johns Pizza, I do hope that Manning retires. He can barely throw a ball, he can't feel his fingers. He comes back again, he'll be carried out of the stadium on his shield. The future is bright: he may coach, commentate, open a pizza franchise, maybe all three.
As for Cam Newton? We will probably see him again in another game. It's going to be hard for him to live down images of him writhing around on the sideline like a Diego Costa complaining about being Diego Costa. Dancing during the good times is easy; losing with dignity is quite another thing. A hard lesson, but one that will probably serve him well. Being miserable builds character.
Well. That's all from here at super bowl central. Good night everyone!
For the Troops!!
